Eleven Races Will Kick Off Thoroughbred Season
Hoosier Park Racing and Casino will open its 14th season of Thoroughbred racing Friday, Aug. 29 with 11 races. The 63-day meet will offer live racing Wed. through Sunday with a new post time schedule. 
Live racing will be conducted Wed. and Thurs. at 6:45 p.m. while Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will showcase a new afternoon post time of 12:45 p.m. Also, a special Labor Day racing card is scheduled Monday, Sept. 1 beginning at 3 p.m. No live racing will be held Wed., Sept. 3. Racing resumes with the regular schedule Thursday, Sept. 4.
Hoosier Park’s 2007 leading trainer, owner, and jockey will be back to defend their titles. Ralph Martinez and Louis O’Brien will go for their sixth straight titles in the trainer and owner categories, respectively. Martinez and O’Brien completed the 2007 season with 41 wins, and serve as the track’s all-time leading trainer and owner with 228 career wins around Hoosier Park’s oval.
“It’s always nice to return to Hoosier Park,” said Martinez. “I really enjoying racing here and it has been fun to see all the new changes the track has experienced with the addition of the casino. Indiana racing has a bright outlook and we are glad to be part of it. We’ll do our best to defend the title.”
Orlando Mojica, a two-time leading rider at Hoosier Park, also returns off a stellar year in 2007. The native of Puerto Rico scored 91 wins last season, and picked up the leading rider title earlier this year at Indiana Downs. Mojica heads to Hoosier Park with 144 wins this year.
The racing season will be highlighted by the Grade II $400,000-added Indiana Oaks Friday, Oct. 3 and the Grade II $500,000-added Indiana Derby Saturday, Oct. 4. Post time Oaks Day is 3 p.m. while the Derby Day card starts at 2 p.m. followed by an outdoor concert featuring Trisha Yearwood beginning at 8:30 p.m.
