Mojica Ready For 2008 Meet

Two-time leading rider at Hoosier Park Orlando Mojica is back for the 2008 meet. The 26-year-old was dominant in his category last year, earning 91 wins over Victor Lebron, who finished second with 61. ORLANDO_Mojica_web.jpg

A native of Puerto Rico, Mojica has posted a great year to date. He comes into Hoosier Park’s 63-day meet with 144 wins and purse earnings in excess of $1.6 million. Mojica also earned another leading rider title at Indiana Downs this year, placing him in perfect position to continue his winning ways in the state of Indiana.

“So far, it’s been a good year,” said Mojica. “It would be really nice to win a third title. I’d also like to break my own record for wins in one season at Hoosier Park, so that will be a goal for me this year. I hope I can, but if not, that is fine. I just want to win races and do well. That will make me happy.”

Mojica earned 100 wins during the 2003 meet to grab the top spot in the jockey standings. He is only one of three jockeys to ever eclipse the 100-win mark in the 13-year history of racing at Hoosier Park. He joins Jon Court and Terry Thompson, who holds the record for most wins in one season at 122 set in 2001, in that category.

Mojica will possibly be looking to add another goal to his list of accomplishments. His father, Rafael Sr., is in the Midwest this season. The elder Mojica is currently working and riding alongside the younger Mojica at Ellis Park. They have competed against one another in a few races at Ellis Park, but to be joined by his brother, Rafael Jr., would be even more of a feat for the Mojica family.

“My brother, Rafael, is currently at Monmouth and might come here later on this fall,” said Mojica. “It would be really cool to have all three of us in one race. This is the first time in my life that I have ridden against my father, and although my brother and I have competed against one another many times, it would be great to get him out here for a race with me and my father.”

Until then, Mojica will return to Indiana and concentrate on what he does best – winning races. He’ll be looking for his third time to go after a Hoosier Park title to be his lucky charm.
