Fillemup Phil Fastest in Hoosier Park Classic Trials
Two Quarter Horse trials were contested to finalize the field for the $100,000 added Hoosier Park Classic Final at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino on Friday, Sept. 28. Fillemup Phil raced to the top qualifying mark while Air Born Leader took the second trial.
Ridden by Oscar Delgado for trainer Danny Lang, Fillemup Phil broke a step behind Shawne Bay and Juan Delgado, but the five-year-old gelding quickly found another gear en route to posting a 400-yard time of :20.122. Fillemup Phil sustained a late closing charge from the heavy betting favorite, Lovemelikethat and Shanley Jackson who finished a game second. Shawne Bay held on for the third place finish. Fillemup Phil returned $6.40 for the win.
Bred in Indiana by Guy Trolinger, Fillemup Phil notched his fourth victory in seven starts this season while bankrolling over $70,000. In his last Hoosier Park outing, Fillemup Phil won an allowance event on Sept. 8 with Delgado in the irons, once again. Sired by Brookstone Bay, the brown gelding is owned by Brian Gunder.
Air Born Leader and Gerardo Garrido didn’t disappoint as the 4-5 favorite when they marched home winners in the second and final trial of the evening. The gray colt by Leader of the Class took his game to another level as he posed his fifth win in six starts this season.
Air Born Leader broke on top and never looked back as he barreled down the track to reach the wire first. Big Brown Dash closed well to finish second as Eyes Got Hope overcame a bad break to finish third. Air Born Leader returned $3.60 to win as the heavy betting favorite.
The four-year-old gelding completed the 400-yard task in :20.194 to post the third fastest qualifying time on the evening. It was Air Born Leader’s eighth win in 20 career starts as he pushed his career earnings over $237,000. Four of those wins came earlier this season as he stepped into aged company and posted four consecutive wins at Indiana Downs. Owned and bred by Randy Thompson, Air Born Leader is out of the Born Runner mare, Air Born Jazz.
“I’ve got a good jockey, a good owner, and a great horse,” winning trainer Tom Mosley Jr. noted of his horse. “Last week he stumbled pretty bad and you can’t make that kind of mistake against those horses, but I knew he would bounce back and be better this week. This horse has really stepped up this year.”
Led by Fillemup Phil and Lovemelikethat, the horses with the 10 fastest times will race in the final on Saturday, October 13. The complete list of qualifiers is as follows: Fillemup Phil (:20.122), Lovemelikethat (:20.129), Air Born Leader (:20.194), Shawne Bay (:20.219), Big Brown Dash (:20.351), Eyes Got Hope (:20.357), Oceans Tidalwave (:20.536), Rarely A Suspect (:20.596), Gypsy Effort (:20.617), Indy Power (:20.666).
