CB Red Bullet Sets Quarter Horse Track Record

CB Red Bullet and jockey Oscar Delgado shot to victory in the first Quarter Horse race of the 2009 season Sunday, Aug. 2, setting a new track record in the process. The two-year-old gelded son of Takin On The Cash stopped the timer in :17.67 seconds for the 330 yard event, breaking the previous record of :17.88 set by Hava Cool Breeze in 2003.

Holding his own along the inside, the sorrel gelding led the way through the entire sprint, outlasting a late move by MC Mystery Preview and J.D. Mitchener in the last few steps to win by a neck. Fishin for Magic and Shanley Jackson were three-quarters of a length back in third.

“This horse (CB Red Bullet) got out of the gate clean and ran hard,” said Delgado. “He was strong all the way to the finish. I’ve never ridden for this trainer (Bart Sachleben) before, so I appreciate the opportunity to ride. I didn’t know it was a track record.”

CB Red Bullet is owned by Carolyn Bruce and trained by Sachleben. He was making only his second career start in the race and earned his first career win. He had only one previous outing at Indiana Downs in May of 2009.

A native of Mexico, Delgado is the younger brother of Juan Delgado, 2008 leading Quarter Horse jockey at Hoosier Park. Now based in Michigan, the younger Delgado recently completed the 2009 meet at Indiana Downs among the top 10. He finished fourth in the standings at Hoosier Park last fall. Delgado is also competing at Mount Pleasant Meadows in Michigan and Prairie Meadows in Iowa.

Former leading Quarter Horse trainer Ron Raper got off to a good start in 2009, winning two of the three Quarter Horse races on the card Sunday, Aug. 2. Raper recorded wins with Patriot Warrior and was back in the winner’s circle with Uncommon Episode to win the $23,000 Allowance for two-year-old registered Indiana breds.
