Running Bride Wins City of Anderson
Running Bride was a runaway winner in the 10th running of the City of Anderson Saturday, Sept. 12 at Hoosier Park Racing and Casino. The two-year-old Indiana bred filly completed the five and one-half furlong event in a time of 1:06.0 with jockey Rodney Prescott aboard.
Breaking from post two, Prescott had Running Bride out of the gate quickly but was immediately joined by Edgewise and Orlando Mojica and Ms. Red Hawk and Nelson Arroyo on the outside. The trio of fillies continued to battle to the turn before Running Bride was able to shake off the competition.
“In her first start, she (Running Bride) broke bad, but she handled that well and still came back to win impressively,” said Prescott. “Today, she was a little more relaxed and broke really well.”
In the stretch, Running Bride responded to a simple urging by Prescott and opened up on the field. In the final strides, she was relaxed and well in hand, winning by three and three-quarter lengths over Edgewise, who was five lengths ahead of stablemate Impressively and Azael De Leon for third.
“I had to wake her (Running Bride) up a little in the stretch,” said Prescott. “She almost got too relaxed. Trainer Eddie Kenneally has done a great job with her. She’s a nice filly. I think we will be seeing a lot of this filly in the future.”
Prescott, Hoosier Park’s all-time leading rider, is currently in second place on the leading jockey standings for 2009. The native of Portland, Ind. is part of the newly formed Great Eight, which showcases eight of Hoosier Park’s jockeys throughout the 2009 racing season.
Running Bride now has two wins in two career starts for John Lally’s Summerplace Farm. The bankroll for the Cherokee Run daughter is now in excess of $44,000.
Running Bride will most likely be involved in the next stakes event for Indiana bred fillies. The $70,000 Miss Indiana is set for Saturday, Oct. 10 running at a distance of six furlongs. Freshman fillies will also have another opportunity for stakes action in the $70,000 Indiana Stallion Stakes set for closing weekend Friday, Oct. 23.
