Borel Coming to Hoosier Park for Indiana Derby
Two-time Kentucky Derby winning jockey Calvin Borel will compete at Hoosier Park Racing and Casino Saturday, Oct. 3 during Indiana Derby Day. Borel is scheduled to ride in three races, including the Grade III $500,000-added Indiana Derby aboard Sumo from post three.
A native of Louisiana, Borel first caught national attention following his Kentucky Derby win with Street Sense in 2007. He returned this May to stun racing fans with an inside move into the stretch that placed Mine That Bird under the finish line first, paying more than $100 to win, the second biggest upset in Kentucky Derby history.
In addition to the Kentucky Derby win, Borel has experienced success with Rachel Alexandra, winner of the Kentucky Oaks and the Preakness. His Kentucky Derby-Preakness win aboard two different horses marked a first in the history of the Triple Crown.
Borel, who has more than 4,700 career wins, will be available for autographs outside the winner’s circle following the first race. Autograph cards of Borel can be purchased for $5 and all proceeds will be donated to the Disabled Jockeys Fund. Reed Palmer, photographer from Churchill Downs, has donated photos of Borel winning the Kentucky Oaks aboard Rachel Alexandra and 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird for the autograph session with Borel.
The 15th running of the Indiana Derby is scheduled as the 11th race on the 13-race program. Estimated post time for the Derby is 5:15 p.m. EST.
Live racing continues at Hoosier Park Racing and Casino Wednesday through Sunday until Saturday, Oct. 24. Racing is held Wednesday and Thursday beginning at 4:45 p.m. Racing begins Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 12:45 p.m.
