Trust N Seven Wins Hoosier Sophomore Filly Division
Trust N Seven, guided by Leandro Goncalves, kicked off the first of four stake races on the Indiana Derby card Saturday, Oct. 5 with a solid win in the first running of the $70,000 Hoosier Sophomore Stakes for fillies. The three-year-old bested a field of nine by more than 11 lengths at the finish to win her fourth race in six starts for 2009.
Starting from post seven, Trust N Seven broke well in mid-pack and secured a comfortable spot among horses as Lauries Wish and Rodney Prescott set the pace over Ponita and Julio Felix. Down the backside, Trust N Seven began to move up on the leaders and heading into the turn, she made her move.
Trust N Seven began to lengthen her stride around the far turn and when the field hit the stretch, she was in full gear to take control of the race. The daughter of Trust N Luck drew off easily and coasted home for the win over Eskimo’s Best and Victor Lebron, who closed well from the back for second. Appoint and Diego Rodriguez split horses in the turn to finish third.
“This filly (Trust N Seven) hasn’t run in six weeks, so I have to give the credit to the filly and to Mike (Lauer),” said Goncalves. “She did it all on her own. She’s nice to ride and always gives you her best.”
Trust N Seven now has two stakes wins in a row at Hoosier Park for owner-breeder Penny Lauer. She has six career wins in nine outings, pushing her bankroll to more than $220,000 lifetime. Mike Lauer trains.
Trust N Seven connected earlier in the year with Goncalves to win the $70,000 Ellen’s Lucky Star Stakes at Indiana Downs. She was also the winner by a neck last year in the $100,000 Miss Indiana Stakes at Hoosier Park under the direction of Orlando Mojica.
Goncalves, who is currently ranked seventh in the nation with more than 210 wins in 2009, finished second in the standings at Hoosier Park last year. The native of Brazil is the current leading rider at Turfway Park and is concentrating on the Kentucky circuit this fall.
