ITOBA Paddock Sale Set For Final Week
By Andrew Brown
Hoosier Park will be hosting an Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (ITOBA) Paddock Sale Tuesday, Oct. 20. Several horses will be available during the sale that have been racing at Hoosier Park this fall. The horses will be available for inspection that morning at 8 a.m. The sale will begin at 1 p.m. and will be held in the Receiving Barn (Barn 17) on the backstretch at Hoosier Park.
Horses in the sale are of all ages and capabilities. Several horses up for auction are looking for a second career following the racetrack. Thoroughbred horses make excellent candidates for other equine careers such as pleasure riding, jumping, and the show ring.
A non-refundable entry fee of $50.00 is required to register all horses into the ITOBA Paddock Sale. In addition to the entry fee, consignors agree to pay ITOBA a commission of five percent (5%) of the final bid recognized by the auctioneer if the horse is sold to a bona fide buyer, up to a maximum commission of $150.00. A $25.00 buy-back fee will be charged on all repurchases. There will be a reserve price of $350 placed on every horse entered in this sale. If the consignor wishes to set a higher reserve above $350, then the consignor is solely responsible to bid in order to establish the desired price.
Hoosier Park Racing and Casino has a strict policy in place for all horses that enter auctions or are sold privately following their career on the track. The policy states that any trainer or owner stabling at Hoosier Park who directly or indirectly participates in the transport of a horse from Hoosier Park to a slaughter facility or to an auction to sell horses for slaughter will be prohibited from having stalls at the track.
The ITOBA Paddock Sale has become a tradition at Hoosier Park each fall. Numerous horses have been acquired through the sale and have gone on to be successful off the track. Several riding stables in the central Indiana area are always present to find new prospects for the show ring each season.
