Quarantine Lifted at Hoosier Park
Hoosier Park Racing and Casino has lifted the quarantine due to the recent infection of Streptococcus equi (Equine Strangles) on the backstretch. All quarantined horses have been removed from Hoosier Park’s premises. Hoosier Park Racing and Casino will continue to provide stringent biosecurity procedures throughout the remainder of the 2009 meet, which concludes Saturday, Oct. 24.
“We have had no horses outside of the quarantine barn show any clinical signs of infection throughout this entire process,” said Jeff Smith, general manager of racing. “Hoosier Park’s team has been extra diligent in their efforts to follow all protocol and biosecurity procedures outlined by state officials. Even though the quarantine has been lifted, we will continue to execute all biosecurity measures for the remainder of the meet to provide additional safeguards for all horses racing at our facility. We would especially like to thank the Indiana State Board of Animal Health for all of their support and guidance. ”
A total of 54 horses remained in quarantine when the decision was made Oct. 6 to export all horses off property at Hoosier Park. Horses are being tracked and all standard operating procedures recommended by the Indiana State Board of Animal Health are being followed. The barn under quarantine is currently being disinfected and will be locked and unused for the remainder of 2009.
