O’Brien Secures Seventh Consecutive Leading Owner Title

Louis O’Brien, the powerhouse owner from St. Louis, Mo., earned another leading owner title at Hoosier Park Saturday, Oct. 24 to close out the 15th season of Thoroughbred racing. O’Brien earned 17 wins and more than $158,000 in earnings for his seventh consecutive leading owner title. Ron McKay’s M.Y. Stables finished in second place with 14 wins.

Louis_OBrien_Leading_Owner_2009_web.jpgO’Brien, a food distributor, is the primary owner for trainer Ralph Martinez, who has five leading trainer titles to his credit at Hoosier Park. O’Brien has also received national fame in the owner ranks, winning the leading owner title in the country in 2007 with 221 wins. Prior to that, he finished second three years in a row.

In addition to his success at Hoosier Park, O’Brien won the leading owner title at Fairmount Park earlier this season with 48 wins. Martinez also secured another leading trainer title as well. The duo has dominated the ranks at Fairmount Park for the past decade.

O’Brien is currently the all-time leading owner at Hoosier Park. He has 228 career wins at the Anderson, Ind. track, leading the way over Gary Patrick, who has 223 wins in the 15-year history of the track.

Martinez accepted the award for O’Brien from Jeff Smith, general manager of racing. Martinez completed the 2009 season in sixth place on the leading trainer standings.
